Multidrug Resistant
The main intent of the MDR study is to compare the long term clinical benefits
and risks of a 4-month break in
antiretroviral treatment followed by introduction of a new antiretroviral
regimen versus immediately starting a
new antiretroviral regimen.
Participants will receive free genotypic testing during the screenig process.
Participants must:
Be HIV+
Be 13 years or older
Have evidence of MDR virus based on the results of a GART
or
24 months of HAART with greater than 4 weeks exposure to at least 1 NNRTI,
2 PI and 3 NRTIs
Have a Viral Load greater than 10,000 copies/ml
Intend to initiate a new antiretroviral regimen at study defined times
Be on a stable antiretroviral regimen between 14 days prior to the qualifying
GART specimen collection and
randomization.
Not have received any vaccinations or acute illness within 14 days of the
GART specimen
Not have used IL-2 within 120 days prior to the date of the qualifying
GART
Not have an active OI requiring acute treatment
Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
