Flexible Initial Retrovirus Suppressive Therapies

           FIRST
                The FIRST study is trying to determine the best combination of anti HIV drugs for people who
                have never been on anti HIV drugs.

                Participants will be assigned to one of the following combinations of antiretrovirals:
                1 or 2 Protease Inhibitors (PI) + 2 Neucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTI)
                                                                        or
                1 Non-Neucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NNRTI) + 2 NRTI
                                                                        or
                1 or 2 PI + 1 NNRTI + 1 or 2 NRTI

                Participants must:

                    Be HIV+
                    Be 13 years or older
                    Have no prior use of any PI's or NNRTI's
                    Have less and 4 weeks of NRTI use and less than 1 week of 3TC
                    Not be pregnant or breast feeding
                    Not have an active opportunistic infection such as: PCP, CMV, MAC, etc.

                This study can provide some of the drugs. Please ask one of the nurses for more information.

            Substudies:

            Metabolic 061
                The Metabolic study will look at the effects of the three HIV treatment plans used in the FIRST protocol on the
                way your body uses and stores fats and sugars.

                Measurements will include: Blood tests for fats and sugars, measurements of fat and lean body mass and body
                measurements of different areas of your body.

                Must be enrolled in the FIRST protocol.

            Adherence 062
                Care as usual-New Orleans Site is part of the control arm. No intervention.

                Must be enrolled in the FIRST protocol.
